Helm

Helm, eine seit den ältesten Zeiten gebräuchliche Kopfbedeckung für Krieger [Tafel: Kriegswesen I] von Leder oder Metall, im Mittelalter ein Hauptstück der Bewaffnung, bes. zum ritterlichen Lanzenkampf, dabei deckte der Helmkragen (Halskragen) den Hals, das Visier (Helmsturz) das Gesicht. (Über besondere Formen des H. im 13.-16. Jahrh. s. Eisenhut, Kesselhaube, Morion, Schallern, Spangenhelm, Stechhelm, Topfhelm.) Im 17. Jahrh. machte der H. dem Hut Platz, nur die schweren Reiter behielten einen Stahl-H. bei; in Bayern erhielt 1807 die Infanterie den Raupen-H., in Preußen 1843 die Pickelhaube (aus Leder mit Metallbeschlägen), jetzt Kopfbedeckung des deutschen Heers, außer Jägern, Schützen, Maschinengewehrabteilungen, Luftschiffertruppen und Marineinfanterie (Tschako), Husaren (Pelzmütze) und Ulanen (Tschapka), und mit metallener Spitze (bei der Artillerie Kugel) versehen. Gardedukorps, Kürassiere, Schwere Reiter, Jäger zu Pferde und Leibgendarmerie tragen einen H. aus Stahl oder Tombak. Der Tropen-H. ist gewöhnlich aus Kork. – Vgl. G. von Suttner (1878).
